Statement

八木酒造は４００年近く酒造りを行ってきた場所であると共に、町の中心とも言える存在であったそうだ。

かつては大変賑やかだった酒造の前の通りの様子や、夏になると水泳場となった裏手の大堰川、そしてそこに集う人々をずっとみつめてきたのだろう。

初めて酒造を訪れた時、建物自体が持つ時間の長さに圧倒されると同時に、酒造りの道具や機械に目が止まった。それらはとても丁寧に整頓されていて、

仕事をしていた人々の日々の振る舞いを写し取っているように思えた。

そういった道具や酒造に関わってきた人々の言葉、記録など、今存在しているものから、かつての風景を想像してみようと思う。

 

 Alongside serving as a place for brewing sake for more than 400 years, it is said that Yagi Shuzo was once the center of the local area.

It has surely always gazed out at the formerly bustling street in front of the brewery or at the people who came to the Ooi River behind the brewery to swim during the summer.

 When I first visited the brewery, I was overwhelmed by the length of time encompassed in the building, while I simultaneously took note of the tools and machines used for brewing sake. They were all delicately arranged, replicating the daily behavior of the people who work there.

​

 From those tools and the things that currently exist such as records and the words of people who have been involved in the brewery, I try to imagine the landscape of that time.

​

 One of the meanings of katashiro is a “substitute” or “stand-in.” This work functions as a kind of katashiro, conveying the history and memories of the brewery on behalf of the people associated with it.

Structure / Installation

本作では、酒造に残されていた道具や記録、インタビューから得た関係者の言葉、光や音といった要素を、空間内に点在させるように配置している。
それぞれの要素は明確な物語や説明を持たず、互いに緩やかに関係しながら同じ場に存在している。

本来は鑑賞者が空間を移動し、視点や距離を変えながら断片的な要素と出会うことを想定して制作したが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により展覧会は中止となり、実際にはインストールのみを行なった。

​そのため本作は、設営された空間を記録した映像作品として発表している。空間に人が不在である状態や、鑑賞行為が映像を通して間接化されていることも含めて、
記憶や歴史との距離、そしてそれらを引き受けるための「形代」としてのあり方が、静かに立ち上がっていく。
